Bellus Magazine (BM):  How long have you been making music?
Madi Diaz (MD):  I’ve been making music for a living for 6 years now. holy crap that’s crazy. i mean, i started PLAYING music when i was little, my dad started me on piano when i was 5, but i didn’t really plan on making my future in music. i was pulled into the vortex and have never climbed out!

BM:  Tell us a bit about your newest album PHANTOM?

MD:  I’m really proud of Phantom. When i named the record i meant quite literally the meaning of the word. when someone leaves me, when an emotion leaves me, when i leave a place, the feeling or experience that was once so tangible and so real is gone. i ran around in total cali love and was left with vapors. so….i wrote about them!Screen Shot 2014-08-14 at 5.10.35 PM

BM:  Tell us about the inspiration behind your new video for “Stay Together?”

MD:  The record is super lush and i was definitely striving to reflect that in all of my visuals. one of my closest friends pried me from my apartment in the early winter this last year as i was finishing the record, and made me come with her downtown to the LACMA. i had never heard of James Turrell, but after seeing his show (i went back TWO MORE TIMES) i was pretty obsessed with the purity and brilliance of his work with light, and Claire Marie Vogel shared in my obsession. i think she truly emoted and really nailed it with this video.

BM:  What was it like touring with Fitz and the Tantrums? What other tours do you have upcoming?

MD:  Touring was super fun with those guys. their fans are just SO engaged and ready for music to happen, so that made playing the shows incredibly rewarding! this fall we’ll be joining X Ambassadors and Jamie N common for a little while, and then meeting up with Echosmith. I’m super excited cause i’ve basically had all the bands songs stuck in my head on a loop at various points lately haha.

BM:  What inspires you to make music?

MD:  Most recently it’s been inspiring to find spaces in Los Angeles that are a strange and eerie quiet in the midst of the insane big city chaos. I’m real into long hallways right now. the darker and cooler the better.

BM:  What advice can you give to other aspiring artist out there?

MD:  Don’t stop. ever.
