Bellus Magazine (BM): What is it like working on the show “The Haves and Have Nots”?
Allison McAtee (AM): I’m so grateful for the experience. There are so many talented people
involved in the show, and everyone was so welcoming to my arrival. The
shooting schedule is intense. We shoot an episode a day, and I come
from a background of network television where you have a week for an
episode, so I hit the ground running and it was a little like
“boot camp.” It’s a been a blast and absolutely invaluable.
BM: Tell me about your character Maggie Day.
AM: Maggie is the governortorial campaign manager of Jim Cryer (played by
John Schneider) and David Harrington (played by Peter Parros.) Maggie
is driven (maybe to a fault) and a lot of her behavior is rooted in ego
and her desire to win. Savvy and Stylish. She absolutely wants to get
behind a “winner.” Helmut Lang is probably Maggie’s favorite
designer- so my wardrobe fittings are a blast! 😉
BM: What was it like for you the first time you saw yourself on TV acting?
AM: I was initially focused on specific features. I think a common first reaction of actors seeing themselves is a critical eye to their physical appearance. We aren’t used to seeing ourselves in motion. 😉 At this point I’ve gotten used to my image and now notice when I’m truthful and when a little lie creeps into my work. The goal is unabashed honesty in a character. I’m always trying to improve my craft and I think studying one’s work is a guaranteed way to grow.
BM: What would be an ideal role that you would want to play?
AM: The woman who (however flawed) keeps striving to overcome adversity. A hero of sorts. I think those are the characters that inspire us to never give up on our own goals.
And…on the flip side- I also love being the bad guy!! The villain is always fun- So..maybe…my ideal is a “bad guy” who evolves and then turns out to be the hero. 😉
BM: What can we expect from Allison McAtee? Film, TV?
AM: I’ll be back in the next season of “The Haves and the Have Nots” on OWN
this summer. I’ve also been developing a series with some friends. It’s
stylistically a ‘Lynchian Noir’ so I’m excited to see it transpire.
