Bellus Magazine (BM): You recently launched your “Lights Out” clothing line. What inspired you to create this line and to become involved in the fashion world?
Shane Merman (SM): I earned the name Lights Out through hard work, dedication, and fitness. As a result, this drove me to become involved in the fashion world. I began in the apparel space when I was in college, selling Lights Out shirts on my campus. This became something that I wanted to continue in the future and expand further on my ideas. Today, I have been able to accomplish this inspiration through perseverance and determination.
BM: Do you see yourself expanding your line in the future?
SM: Absolutely. I think that Lights Out will become a relevant household name and a lifestyle brand to anyone dedicated to health and fitness. Through the great partnerships that are happening, Lights Out will be expanding in the future.
BM: Are you involved in any other entrepreneurial endeavors?
SM: Yes. I have always been deeply interested into real estate and development. I’ve been involved in sports broadcasting and TV appearances. My main love and passion has been Lights Out, so I am always looking at different avenues to expand the company.
BM: Being that you have had success as both an athlete and as an entrepreneur, what advice would you give to those looking to get involved in either?
SM: Identify whatever passion that you may have or something that you are great at. If you are looking to become involved in a different field, take that passion and build on that. This passion includes the passion to learn, receive information and being able to apply it. Become familiar with the “kings” and successful people in that particular field and learn from them and their story. Take their information and use that to learn and apply to your own life, to potentially avoid mistakes or any roadblocks. Part of the reason I have been able to become successful is by maintaining great relationships with people and constantly asking questions.
BM: Where does your nickname “Lights Out” come from?
SM: This name originated from when I was in high school. During one of my games, I knocked out four guys. Since then, people started calling me “Lights Out” and the name stuck through college and to this day. I had to keep up with this name while playing pro.
BM: Outside of work, what do you do to occupy your time?
SM: Actually, 90% of my time is involved in some type of work, just because I am deeply involved in other projects. Most of my hobbies pertain to doing something for work. Recently, I’ve made different comedy skits with Youtubers, which I loved and was very fun to do.
BM: What can fans expect to see from you in the near future?
SM: Anyone who knows me since I was young knows that I have always worked the hardest, being at the gym or for my job. With Lights Out, people should expect the best because simply, thats what I’m used to doing and performing. Fans should expect the best from Lights Out Brand in the apparel industry.
